Code Switching in KPop Lyrics
Code switching is also common in KPop lyrics. While many linguists use the terms ‘code mixing’ and ‘code switching’ interchangeably, there are some subtle differences between the two. Code mixing generally seems to deal with changes at the lexical level that are contained within one sentence. As seen in the examples on the previous page, the sentences are predominantly in one language, with only one or two words of the other language mixed in. Code switching happens at the sentence or clause level, with one sentence being in one language while the next sentence may be in another. While not as common as code mixing, code switching does happen in KPop lyrics and is generally associated with bands or entertainment companies who put more of an emphasis on the proper use of English within songs.
